CLUB RECOGNITION PROGRAM

ALUMNI BIKE TEAM

Many thanks to all who supported the Purdue Alumni of South Florida Bike team
so generously during the 2009  MS 150 Bike Ride benefiting the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society.

It was a great ride with nearly three thousand riders participating and raising
around $2,000,000 for MS.
Our team raised over $1,000 in the name of Purdue
Alumni.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Congratulations to our 2009scholarship recipient Paul Brooks of Coral Springs.
Paul was selected on his academic performance and extracurricular activities.
The Purdue Club of South Florida is proud to award Paul with a $500 scholarship
and wish him continued success as he pursues Freshman Engineering at Purdue.

Our club’s scholarship is to be given to incoming Purdue freshmen from Dade,
Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties.  Applicants will be judged
based on their academic success, personal merits and financial need.  If you know
an incoming freshman who would like to be considered for a scholarship in the
future, please contact Stephanie Eberline at sdenotaris@hotmail.com.    The
recipient will be notified in the spring, and invited to upcoming events.

COMMUNICATIONS

Most of our communications are accomplished with e-mail.  If you are not
receiving occasional e-mail communications from the Purdue Alumni on campus
it may be because they do not have a current e-mail address for you.  Update your
information today at www.purduealum.org/ and click on the Quick Link on the
right.

More importantly, If you would like to receive our local club communications
please send an e-mail to
dickstevens@comcast.net and you will begin receiving our
communications.

WEB SITE

Our Web site, www.boilersonthebeach.com, is active and updated regularly.
Bookmark it and check it often as the “events” page is the quickest and best way to
stay up to date with our activities.  Don’t miss “Boiler Jim’s” football blog during
the season.  The “join us” page and the “events” page are provided with a PayPal
button to simplify payment of dues and event charges.  Please use it.  It is free and
greatly simplifies administrative work.

NOW HERE IS THE “KICKER”! – MEMBERSHIP

Our club membership has grown in 2008-2009 but there are still faces in the
crowd who are not members.  Naturally our cry is always “come one, come all” to
all of our events.  We would, however, like to have you all as club members.

The Purdue Club of South Florida depends on its membership to show support
through an annual activity fee. Thanks to our success in the Purdue Alumni Club
Recognition program we have the luxury of revenue sharing funds.  Consequently
our family activity fee for the upcoming year (2009-2010) will remain a mere ten
dollars per household.  The activity fee covers much of the administrative expense
of the club (website, surveys, mailings) as well as offset the costs of membership
events like the annual "Party on the Rooftop" or tailgate gatherings.  To pay your
activity fee online, go to:
http://www.boilersonthebeach.com/joinusPayPal.html
or  the boilersonthebeach.com “Join the Club” button.

What are the benefits of club membership?  Event discounts, better
communication and knowing that you are supporting a great local club that
proudly carries the Purdue banner across South Florida. (And you don’t have to
ask the Big Ten Alumni here about that!)

Please join us if you have not already done so!  Your support is very important to
the success of our club.  Join now and enjoy membership through June, 2010!

Remarkably, many Purdue Club of South Florida members are not members of
the Purdue Alumni Association.  All alumni are encouraged to continue showing
their pride and support by becoming a member of the Purdue Alumni Association.
Annual dues are only $50 annually and a lifetime membership is $1000.
Membership in PAA is more than just a yearly subscription to the association's
Purdue Alumnus magazine and a pocket calendar.  Membership in PAA provides
many insurance and credit card options as well as travel benefits.

For more information on PAA membership and the value of membership, go to:

A NOTE FROM DICK………..( I HOPE YOU GOT THIS FAR!)

While 2009 offers more opportunities for alumni to gather and have fun, the club
must organize itself more fully to meet new standards required by PAA.  In the
coming months, the club will be asked to formalize a club constitution and elect
officers with established term lengths.  As bureaucratic as this might sound, PAA
streamlines the process with some good expert advice and support.  A rotation of
club officers also keeps the club revitalized and distributes "the workload".  Too
often, clubs begin to backslide because leadership doesn't change.  These changes
will make for a stronger PAA and of course, better Boilers on the Beach
organization.  If I have not personally been in touch with you about the future of
the club and you are interested in more organizational involvement please email
me at dickstevens@comcast.net or call 954.817.1449.

I encourage everyone to rededicate themselves to ensuring 2009 is a more fun
year for Purdue Alumni in South Florida.  Whether the club is a source for
networking, meeting new friends and renewing old acquaintances, or simple black-
and-gold  camaraderie, this club is YOURS.  Together we can continue the growth
tha
t began five years ago.

Once again I want to say a major thanks to all of you who have so loyally supported
and helped me with our many events.  You are the ones who have made our club
grow!

If you have not done so, please join us soon at one of our events.  Please join our
club!  It is a wonderful group of folks sharing our Purdue heritage.  Boiler Up!  Hail
Purdue!  See you there!

BOILERS ON THE BEACH
NEWS
BOILERS ON THE BEACH
NEWS!

As we are about to close out  our club’s fiscal year it is
appropriate to briefly recap the Boilers On The Beach 2008-
2009 year.

The Purdue Club of South Florida is now in its fifth year of
"rebirth" on the Beach!
For new members, the club thanks Ted Priebe who
went to great lengths re-establishing the club
here in 2004.  Ted is now the National Purdue
Alumni Vice-President and will take over the
National Presidency on July 1, 2009.  GO TED!

A 1968 Purdue graduate, Ted is currently a senior
consultant and member of the senior
management team of ABG - Indianapolis, a
consulting firm serving clients in the food and
agriculture sector.  Ted’s leadership credentials
precede him, having served as president of both
our club and the Central Iowa Club.

From some simple football game
viewing events with a handful of
alumni five years ago, the club has
now grown to over a hundred members
and enjoyed over 24 organized events
from popular game watch parties to
happy hour and tailgate gatherings at
Marlin baseball and Dolphin football
games. Our joint activities with the
rest of the Big Ten schools have grown.
The Boilers On The Beach have become
major participants in the annual Big
Ten Picnic and bi-monthly Big Ten
happy hours.  The Purdue Club has
sponsored the tailgate activities for
the Big Ten at both the Dolphins and
Marlins ballgames.
Of course, the highlight of the social
season was our Annual Spring Event
again hosted by Ted Preibe on his
beautiful Fort Lauderdale roof
garden.  This year we were honored
by the appearance of fifteen of
Purdue’s finest seniors visiting Fort
Lauderdale for spring break.  They
made us all proud of our fine
university and we hope they enjoyed
our group as much as we enjoyed
them.  Our thanks to Marcia Graff for
her great planning and
execution.

The Boilers On The Beach have been  major
participants in the local P.A.R.T (Purdue
Alumni Recruiting for Tomorrow) program.
Club volunteers visited eight to ten high
school college fairs in the fall promoting
Purdue.  Our thanks to Arthur Dubin who led
the local program for many years and to
Chuck Tiedje who has assumed the reins this
year.
We are proud to have our very own Jim Brooks elected
as Purdue Alumni Regional Director for the State of
Florida.  Following his Navy career, Jim is now the
civilian Public Affairs Officer at Naval Air Station Key
West. You will recognize him from his “Boiler Jim”
blog on our football blasts and web site!  Having been
involved with several alumni clubs around the
country he is a natural for the job!  Congratulations
Jim!
In 2008 the club received recognition from the
Purdue Alumni Association (PAA) as a "gold
standard" club for year 2007-2008.  Factoring in
alumni participation through events and
fundraising, this gold standard provides your
club fund-sharing advantages for more events as
well as a scholarship for a local student attending
Purdue University.  We can proudly say that we
are on the way to achieving that goal again for for
the third year in a row in 2008-2009!
